چکیده

Morphology-dependent resonances (MDR’s) of polystyrene microspheres were excited by an optical fiber coupler. For optical elimination of the air–cladding interface at the optical fiber coupler surface, the microsphere was immersed in an index-matching oil. MDR’s were observed, even though the relative refractive index between the microsphere and the oil was only 1.09. The observed MDR spectra are in good agreement with the generalized Lorenz–Mie theory and the localization principle. The scattering efficiency into each MDR is estimated as a function of the impact parameter by means of generalized Lorenz–Mie theory. © 1997 Optical Society of America [S0740-3224(97)01804-3]

Chemical and Biological Sensing through Optical Resonances in Microcavities

A microdroplet or a latex microsphere often acts as an optical cavity that supports Morphology Dependent Resonances (MDRs) at wavelengths where the droplet circumference is an integer multiple of the emission wavelength. Enhanced radiative energy transfer through these optical resonances can also be utilized as a transduction mechanism for chemical and biological sensing. Enhancement in radiati...

Optical properties of surface plasmon resonances of coupled metallic nanorods.

We present a systematic study of optical antenna arrays, in which the effects of coupling between the antennas, as well as of the antenna length, on the reflection spectra are investigated and compared. Such arrays can be fabricated on the facet of a fiber, and we propose a photonic device, a plasmonic optical antenna fiber probe, that can potentially be used for in-situ chemical and biological...

Dynamics of fast and slow pulse propagation through a microsphere-optical-fiber system.

We discuss the mechanism of fast and slow light generation when optical pulses propagate through a fiber taper coupled to an ultrahigh-Q microsphere system in the time domain. Fast and slow light are explained as interference effects between ballistic light through the fiber and circulated light within the sphere. One of the striking effects predicted by this model is dynamic pulse splitting in...

Coupling of ultrathin tapered fibers with high-Q microsphere resonators at cryogenic temperatures and observation of phase-shift transition from undercoupling to overcoupling.

We cooled ultrathin tapered fibers to cryogenic temperatures and controllably coupled them with high-Q microsphere resonators at a wavelength close to the optical transition of diamond nitrogen vacancy centers. The 310-nm-diameter tapered fibers were stably nanopositioned close to the microspheres with a positioning stability of approximately 10 nm over a temperature range of 7-28 K. A cavity-i...

Stand-Off Biodetection with Free-Space Coupled Asymmetric Microsphere Cavities

Asymmetric microsphere resonant cavities (ARCs) allow for free-space coupling to high quality (Q) whispering gallery modes (WGMs) while exhibiting highly directional light emission, enabling WGM resonance measurements in the far-field. These remarkable characteristics make "stand-off" biodetection in which no coupling device is required in near-field contact with the resonator possible. Here we...
